The International Society of Automation (ISA) has announced the recipients of its 2024 scholarships, awarding US$60,000 to support tuition and research activities for 30 students from seven countries—including four in Western Canada.

ISA awards various named endowment and division scholarships to college and university students who demonstrate “outstanding potential” for long-range contribution to the fields of automation, instrumentation, systems and control.

One of the recipients for 2024 in the named endowment category is Sahar Sowdagar (pictured, left), a graduate student currently earning a Master of Science (MSc) in electrical, electronics and communications engineering at the University of British Columbia’s (UBC’s) Okanagan Campus in Kelowna, B.C.

Two construction and design division scholarships go to (a) Maria Roselle Cahilig (pictured, right), who has also studied instrumentation engineering at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Edmonton and is now working for Thermo Design Engineering (TDE) as an instrumentation student, and (b) Edison Macatangay, studying instrumentation engineering technology at Saskatchewan Polytechnic in Moose Jaw, Sask.

Finally, a chemical and petroleum industries division scholarship goes to Wilson Williams, another student at Saskatchewan Polytechnic.

“On behalf of the society, I would like to congratulate our slate of scholarship recipients,” says ISA CEO and executive director Claire Fallon. “Supporting the next generation of automation professionals is critical as ISA works to advance its mission to create a better world through automation. We look forward to seeing their contributions to our field in the future.”
